Nope, I'm not taking a trip there (someday, maybe), but my friend Alex is! (Remember Alex? Vegetarian partner-in-fooding in Paris, and Philly, and NYC, and official Giant Manatee tamer.) He's in Jordan right now and will be in Amman at the end of the month to visit early Islamic archaeological sites. In the off chance that any of you well traveled, food-loving people can help suggest food recommendations in Amman, please leave a comment or drop me a line at roboppy@gmail.com. Thank you!

I really enjoy Nood Asia at Abdoun Circle. It is a Thai oriented restaurant with lots of noodle dishes. I also love their coconut-red-curry soup.
Fakr El Din - amazing food in a great setting. Cab drivers should know where it is.

Best shawarma in the world. It's right down the block from the Intercontinental hotel:

I have only been at the Jordanian border but from talking to people who crossed over, I can definitely tell Alex he should try as much fresh hummus, fresh warm pita from a market, and falafel in or outside pita as he can stuff into himself. Basically, he should try to become a walking chickpea-and-pita container.
Also vegetarian grape leaves melt in your mouth, and salad rocks because Mediterranean salad always rocks.
hey robyn,
long time no talk, i know, but i happened to read this! i actually know Amman relatively well as i've sorta made it a base. i'm in Baghdad now & in fact will be in Amman for a couple of days at the end of the month. tell him to email me & if our dates coincide i'd love to eat with him! the mideast is a great place to be a vegetarian & one must-eat in Amman is Hashem's downtown -- fantastic hummus, fuul & perfectly fresh falafel. i have more recs & will email you with 'em!
Hey Robyn! I've read your blog forever and have never commented, until now!
My rec is definitely more "western" type food, but the Blue Fig has a pretty big menu...pastas, salads, burgers, lots of stuff. I have to admit it was a nice break after three weeks of local food in Egypt and Jordan!
Hope Alex is having a great time...that sounds like an amazing trip.
Thanks for your recs, everyone! SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE, YOU HAVE!!! ...PULSATING BRAINWAVES, EVERYWHERE.
I've told Alex to check out this post, so he should be eating well soon. I wish I could get in on that falafel action.
He should definitely go to Books at Cafe and sit at one of the tables outside on the balcony. It's good food in an crazy-beautiful setting. (It's where I basically fell in love with my husband.)
