The Girl Who Ate Everything

Blogging about food and whatever since 2004.

Going to Portland This Week, June 30 - July 3

View PDX Serious Eats in a larger map

I probably should've mentioned this earlier, but I'm visiting Portland (Oregon) with Erin Zimmer this weekend for a Serious Eats-related trip from Wednesday night until Saturday night. The point of the trip: research the best food Portland has to offer for our upcoming Serious Eats book. And we will accomplish this by EATING AS MUCH GOOD FOOD AS WE CAN just shy of puking.

As our time is limited, we already have an impossibly long list of places to tackle (which I will share with those who are interested), so we're set on the food recommendation front. Maggie and her husband Matt are going to help us eat on Thursday and Friday, and my friend Rebecca is coming down from Seattle to eat with us on Saturday, but we could probably use more stomachs here and there. I'm not under the impression I have any readers in Portland (aside from the friend I already contacted; HI, EZRA!), but if I do...SPEAK NOW...and maybe we can get fatter together.

UPDATE: Thanks for raising your virtual hands, Portland eaters! I just popped in the handy dandy map Erin made. Look at all those blue markers...mmmyes....oh lord.

Some people have recommended pizza to us, but methinks we're not eating pizza because Adam has that covered. :) We chose places based on what we're covering in our book, which is breakfast, sandwich, dessert, and food cart-heavy

Dude! I've been reading your blog(s) forever, and I am a resident of Portland, OR. So excited you are coming. I hope our city and the food live up to your expectations!!!

ACK! Of course you choose the ONE weekend I'm flying from PDX to California!

A sister's gotta promote her favorites-- Pix Patisserie, Russell Street BBQ, Corbett Fish House or Hawthorne Fish House, Violetta foodcart, and brunch at the Blue Pig Cafe.

Or, at the very least, pleeeeease try to get to the east side of the River. It's a completely different world from the west side and the Pearl District (the Pearl is where we keep the hipsters).

Of course you have fans in Portland! I agree with Mary Sue. Russell Street BBQ or Podnah's has to be tried. And seriously Meat Cheese Bread will elevate your idea of a sandwich.

Mary: OH SHIZZZzzz bad timing. :( Thanks for the recs! We are SOOOO going to the east of the river, don't worry. :D Actually, I'm just gonna update this post with a map of everything we're planning to eat to give you an idea of what's goin down. I almost forgot Erin made a map!

I'm a Portland reader and i love your blog! If you need a few more suggestions: go to Pok Pok (SE 32nd & Division) for amazing Thai food. My friend and i love Pho Gia (NE 20th & Sandy) for yummy pho. If you're looking for a good doughnut, skip the hype of VooDoo and go to Tonalli's on NE Alberta. Have fun!

please do post your list of places! my sister lives in PDX and I'd love to have some suggestions for when I visit her.

Portland, hell yes! Food carts FTW!! There are definitely seriously good eats to be had in PDX, speaking from experience. Hell, even the airport doesn't disappoint--it's my favorite airport to find myself waiting for a flight and hungry because there are some truly good restaurants and the prices aren't jacked up like at every other US airport!

I hope you have an excellent time!! :D

Hi, I love your blog and so excited for your stomach. I also live in Portland (nw). Go have a St Honore pastry at St Honore bakery on Thurman St... You will love it!! And if you need more recommendation on where to eat thai/Lao food let me know. I know lots of hidden gems.

Hey, didn't know if you would be interested but there is an italian ice cart in Sellwood where Garden State used to be. All natural fresh fruit italian ices no filler all killer. If you get a chance check it out.

COME DO THIS IN BALTIMORE AND I WILL BE YOUR FRIEND. Seriously, I may be a puny little man, but the amount of food I can put away is quite shocking. Just check some of the posts on my blog, I'm a human garbage disposal.

Looking forward to the results as Portland, OR is high up on my places to visit before I die list.

I'm down in Salem, but don't get to downtown Portland very often. Lately, I've been spending waaaay too much time at the Holiday Inn by the Airport, though.

I can't wait to see your reviews!

CRAAAAP! I haven't checked in for a while, and now you're in P-town. I passed up an opportunity to spend the weekend up there, so I'm kicking myself. I live in southern Oregon, about 50 miles from the California border.

If you get this before leaving tomorrow, be sure to check out VooDoo Donuts! The maple-bacon bar is to die for :)

Saw you in Portland taking pics of Whiffie Pie! I was in the line-up to order when I saw you. I would have loved to to say hi but I didn't want to intrude, and it was pouring rain at the time. LOVE LOVE all the foodcarts! Wish they had them in Van, BC.
