Does My Blog Make Your Compy Crash?

One of my readers just told me that visiting this blog makes her computer freeze. :( I AM A SAD PANDA. My site should not make anyone's computer go insane. If this is happening to you, please let me know. Better yet, if you can think of a solution or how I can figure out what's wrong with my site, please let me know. Thanks!

Doesn't make mine crash but the page does load slow compared to most sites.

But the content is so indescribably splendiferous that I don't mind waiting.

Same here as with Rob ... it doesn't crash my browser, but it loads forever-like. I am totally willing to wait, because I know that on the other side I will both laugh and witness various things stuffed with cheese.

But it makes me think, Safari, what is your deal.

It has a lot of graphics and text on it...that's probably why. Especially if the user has an older compy, then there could be issues. If you can contact the girl, tell her to make sure her browser is updated (or try a different browser). Other than that, not much to be done.

Well, it works fine with my computer too! I surf with the last IE version and everything is fine! Don't be sad, you're blog is great! ; )

Doesn't crash me, but take a while to load b/c of all the photos..esp when I want to read more of an entry. Maybe if the photos were resized a bit smaller it would load faster?

roboppy / August 24, 2009 2:20 PM

Thanks for the input, guys! And for reading my blog despite that it moves at the speed of geriatric slug.

Yup, this page is probably a pain to load. That might be a combo of my host, Movable Type, and THE GAZLLION PHOTOS THAT ARE ON IT. I don't optimize them for web since they're all hosted on Flickr. I know they're huge, but to manually optimize every photo would make me want to kill myself. So.

Yeah...sorry. :( I am not kind to slow internet speeds.

Glad to hear no one else's computers are crashing, at least.

It doesn't quite make it crash. Searching just takes forever. Otherwise, it's positively swanky!

Phyllis (me HUNGRY!) / August 24, 2009 3:09 PM

Nope, doesn't crash my computer. And I don't notice it being particularly slow either. So no worries! I've had people tell me the same thing about my blog (probably too many gadgets or photos or something) but I'm not a techie so I don't know have any idea how to fix it :)

Works fine on Chrome and Fire Fox. I usually read you on a RSS-reader and then sometimes go in on the individual posts. Perhaps she could set up a reader, then she only needs to load one post at a time.

Completely random, and perhaps not entirely related, but I'm using Opera and if I were to type in "roboppy.net" I get a fraud warning.

That somehow gets easily circumvented just by adding the "www." in front, but it might be something you want to check?

I used google reader to read your posts most of the time though. Love the fact that all pics and the full entry loads.

When I do access your site, no crashing for me.

Chelle / August 24, 2009 10:56 PM

Thankfully, your blog loads quickly and perfectly, I just don't visit enough! :) I'm using Safari (Mac). Keep blogging!!!

roboppy / August 24, 2009 11:14 PM

Thanks for the feedback, guys! And for enduring painfully slow loading times for me...ee...uh..fail. As Greg suggested, it might be time for me to make the wordpress switch.

Jello: Holy hell, I have no idea what that's about! I'M SCARED. Sounds like some unrelated stuff. Bad stuff. I don't have opera, but I'll ...look into it.

Jennifer / August 25, 2009 9:04 PM

Von, what is the URL of the RSS feed you use? As far as my RSS reader can tell, there is an RSS and an Atom feed, but both of them show just the first couple sentences as an excerpt.

Kate / August 26, 2009 5:23 PM

@Jello

I did a little searching around, and it may be their fraud protection that is on opera. I don't have opera, so this is going from my use of other browsers...try this:
Go to: Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Security
See if under the Fraud Protection if you can set a single web page to not be checked. Then, you could just put in roboppy.net. Otherwise, it seems the only way to control that would be to completely turn off Fraud Protection, which I would never really recommend to anyone. Also, you can try going to http://www.opera.com/support/ and going to Report Bugs. Maybe if several people do it, they will fix the issue.

@ Roboppy: Try popping over here: http://www.opera.com/support/ and going to "Report Bugs". Reporting it may help, as the only other way to contact them would be to go to Norway. (They have US offices, but there doesn't seem to be a phone # for them, or just a general contact email.)

Your site doesn't make my computer crash, but I have the same problems with SLOOOOW load times on my blog and people commenting twice because the page loads slowly and without showing the comment. Why?! I tried getting help from my host, but they were like, "We have no problems when we try it, so...it's fine."

Anyway, I have the same combo of Flickr photos, MT and a possibly slow server. I have a pretty old version of MT, which may be the problem, and am thinking about switching to Wordpress, but the thought kind of makes my head hurt.

I'm done venting now.

I have found that if you reduce the number of active posts to a page, be it a main page or an archive page, you will easily solve these issues. There's a lot of data being loaded and some servers/browsers/PC's just can't handle it like everyone else. So, reduce the number of posts by putting them into an archive or decreasing the number of posts and increasing the number of "View More, etc." pages...you can easily solve your issue.

Though...since my last visit a few weeks back everything seems to be in tip top shape. Though...I must mention I am probably the most PC-literate person I know. ;)
